Bikepacking Bornholm

Bornholm, die versteckte Perle der dänischen Ostsee, erwies sich als perfektes Ziel für unsere Bikepacking-Eskapaden. Die Insel lockte uns mit ihrer eindrucksvollen Natur, charmanten Städten, gut ausgebauten Radwegen und einsamen Schotterpisten.

Tag 1

Als wir in Rønne, der größten Stadt der Insel, von der Fähre gingen, begrüßte uns eine erfrischende Brise. Ausgestattet mit allem, was wir brauchten, begannen wir unsere Reise in Richtung Jons Kapel. Die Route führte entlang malerischer Küstenstraßen, begleitet vom salzigen Duft des Meeres, bis wir schließlich vor der eindrucksvollen Kulisse von Jons Kapel ankamen. Ein würdiger Abschluss für den ersten Reisetag, den wir am Lagerfeuer in unserem Camp mit Meerblick ausklingen ließen. 

Tag 2:

Am nächsten Morgen brachen wir (nicht allzu früh) auf, um neue Abenteuer zu erleben. Unsere Route führte uns auf Forstwegen durch grüne Wälder schließlich zu den Ruinen von Hammerhuset, einer mittelalterlichen Festung. Malerische Dörfer wie Sandvig und Tejn boten Einblicke in den einzigartigen Charme von Bornholm. Und Gudhjem versorgte unsere Pausenbedürfnisse mit Kaffee und lokalen Leckereien. Unsere Etappe endete in Nexø, wo uns ein bereits besetzter Shelter empfing, doch die Gastfreundlichkeit der Einheimischen (Danke Volgmann!) uns den Tag rettete.

Tag 3:

Unsere Neugierde auf Bornholms Natur trieb uns weiter. Unser Ziel sollte Almindingen sein. Heimat der dort frei lebenden Bisons. Wir ließen die Hektik der Straßen um Nexø hinter uns und fanden uns schnell auf einsamen Waldwegen inmitten pittoresker Wälder wieder. Es lief uns kein einziger Bison über den Weg, doch der Aufstieg zum Rytterknaegten, mit seinen gewaltigen 168 Metern Bornholms höchstem Punkt, belohnte uns mit den schönsten Streckenabschnitten des Trips. Am Gipfel angekommen wurden wir zwar nicht mit dem erhofften Ausblick über die Insel jedoch mit einem perfekten Picknickplatz belohnt. Auf dem Rückweg machten wir noch einen Abstecher durch den Ort Aakirkeby und zum Weingut Lille Gadegard bevor unser Tag mit einem erfrischenden Bad in der Ostsee und einem gemütlichen Abend in bei Pizza und Bier in Snogebæk endete.

Tag 4: 

Am vierten Tag hieß es zurück Richtung Norden. Von Snogebæk aus ging erst im Inselinneren dann ab Bølshavn, wo wir uns mit dänische Gebäck und Kaffee belohnten, entlang der Küste. Auf kurvenreichen Straßen durchquerten wir erneut Gudhjem, bevor wir nach einer kurzen Stärkung uns auf den Weg machten, um das idyllische Svartingedalen zu erkunden. Unser Abenteuer endete schließlich in Sorthat Odde, wo wir den Sonnenuntergang über der Ostsee genossen und dankbar für die Erlebnisse waren, die uns Bornholm geschenkt hatte.

Bornholm, a picturesque Danish island in the Baltic Sea, awaited us as a hidden gem for our bikepacking escapades. Its combination of stunning natural landscapes, quaint towns, well-maintained cycling paths, and picturesque gravel roads beckoned us to explore its beauty.
 

Day 1:

As we disembarked in Rønne, the largest town on the island, we felt the refreshing afternoon breeze welcome us. Equipped with everything we needed for the days ahead, our bikes stood ready for adventure. With the sun slowly beginning its descent, casting a golden hue over the horizon, we eagerly set off towards our first destination: Jons Kapel. The route took us along picturesque coastal roads, where the scent of sea salt filled the air, enhancing the sense of anticipation for the journey ahead. Jons Kapel, a striking cliff on Bornholm's east coast, provided a breathtaking backdrop for the end of our first day's journey.
 

Day 2:

The morning of our second day hinted at exciting new discoveries as we headed inland towards Ringebakke Brudet, nestled in a verdant forest. Along pristine gravel roads we continued our journey through Vang to the imposing ruins of Hammerhuset, a medieval fortress steeped in history. The winding roads led us through charming villages like Sandvig and Tejn, each revealing glimpses of Bornholm's unique charm. As the day unfolded, we found ourselves pedaling through the colorful streets of Gudhjem and Svaneke, indulging in local delicacies and soaking in the laid-back island vibe. Our journey culminated in Nexø, where we found the desired shelter already occupied but warmly welcomed by the locals and their hospitality (Thank you Volgmann!).
 

Day 3:

Excited to uncover Bornholm's natural marvels, we ventured towards Almindingen, acclaimed for its free-roaming bison populace. Bid farewell to Nexø's bustling lanes, we treaded tranquil paths weaving through time-old woodlands. The sun's filtered rays painted delicate shadows, elevating the enchantment of our expedition, though ironically, not a single bison graced our path, a whimsical reminder of nature's unpredictable ways.
Our ascent to Rytterknaegten, Bornholm's highest point (a mighty ascent of 168 meters!), though not offering us the sweeping views we had hoped for, provided an excellent picnic spot. The exhilarating descent led us through quaint villages like Aakirkeby, where we took a detour to visit Vingården Lille Gadegard, a local vineyard nestled amidst rolling hills. Here, we savored glasses of crisp wine before venturing back to the coast and our campsite in Snogebæk ending the day with a refreshing bath in the Baltic Sea and Pizza.
 
Day 4:

Our fourth day on Bornholm promised rugged coastal vistas and hidden gems awaiting discovery. Cycling back up North, we traversed inland before hugging the shoreline towards Bølshavn, a quaint village that rewarded us with fresh coffee and Danish pastries from a local bakery. Continuing along winding roads, we passed through Gudhjem again, where we couldn't resist indulging in smoked fish and beer before venturing across the island to Svartingedalen, a beautiful lush valley, where we got another taste of Bornholms natural beauty. Our journey culminated at Sorthat Odde, where we pitched our tents at the beach and enjoyed the spectacle of the sun dipping into the sea. As we gazed out at the endless expanse of the Baltic Sea, a profound sense of gratitude washed over us for the adventure that had brought us to this remarkable place.
